Not all Solventless are created equal and a big part of it has to do with the starting material! A premium solventless extract requires top shelf buds that have been frozen while they are still “alive”. Even the handling of the buds prior to freezing them is extremely important. The Live Rosin process focuses on harvesting or isolating those microscopic trichome heads you see at the surface of the frozen buds using cold room environments, ice, water, agitation, and filtration. The water is removed from around those heads using lyophilization or freeze drying methods to preserve color and flavor. Those heads are then packed into monofilament filter bags that can range from 25u to 10u depending on the hash makers desired filtration of micro particulates. The oils are then mechanically extracted from the trichome heads thru the monofilament filtration bags using low heat latent plates and high pressure. If this process was completed with freshly frozen live buds or lowers it’s considered a “Live Rosin”. The trichome heads produced on the surface of these buds range from 220u down to 25u (u=micron) and provide a wide range of quality based on plants genetics, health, cultivation environments, nutrients, and maturity of the resin glands. Many companies will identify Live Rosin that is made from these collected trichome heads used in the process based on micron size and quality. Quality has to do with the “melt” and can range from 4 Star up to 6 Star. Some companies will identify a Tier system based on yields or how many times they “washed” their material in the hand paddling process. A “Full Spectrum Live Rosin” uses trichome heads between 40u-160u and does not necessarily focus on selecting a quality melt of 5-6*. Depending on the brand, they may or may not share with patients or consumers the micro notation, rather you’ll just see “Live Rosin.” A Premium Live Rosin, (Blue River™️ Signature Live Rosin), sometimes referred to as Heady or Select, focuses on using the best quality 5-6 Star trichome heads that have been harvested and selected in a range of 73u-159u; however, that doesn’t necessarily mean the selection includes all those micron sizes. The starting input material, genetics, environments, and the skill level of the hash maker will determine the end results.
